Filling out online surveys
Pros: Can start straight away, open to most people, no investment of time/money needed
Cons: Limited payouts, shortage of surveys for certain demographics, sometimes you get paid in credit not cash
There are lots of sites offering payment for filling out surveys online but I’m going to recommend just a few, Valued Opinions, MySurvey and Justtheanswer. These three all have a good reputation for paying on time and supplying plenty of surveys to fill out. The payout per survey will vary from 10p to £3.00 and how many you get offered will depend on your profile i.e. your job/gender/age/location so surveys can be hit and miss. I think the most you can realistically make is around £200 a year which doesn’t exactly get my pulse racing but could appeal to some.
Writing content
Pros: Very scalable – write more content and you make more, huge demand
Cons: You won’t earn much in the beginning, time consuming
I’ve spoken about this before on EarningMoneyOnline but most people are unaware of it. One of the main building blocks of any website is content and with 1000s of new sites being created every day there’s a huge demand for articles/blog posts and general text to go on these sites. Some people may think “I’m not good at writing” but even so there is a demand for all levels of content and if you’re a native English speaker you will definitely get work. Content is priced per word and how much you earn will depend on your reputation and the quality you produce. To start with you will probably write for 1p per word and you can get it up to 3 – 4p if you’re good, if you can get the work you could easily be making £20 – £30 a day. To get jobs you have 2 options, go to an agency like TextBroker who will get you writing jobs but take a cut or you can promote yourself on webmaster forums like DigitalPoint or Warrior forum to webmasters who need content. Remember if you build up a reputation as a reliable writer then webmasters will keep coming back for more and you won’t have to bid/look for work.
Freelancing web design/seo/programming
Pros: Make much more money than surveys or article writing, skills that will last for years
Cons: Lots of competition, you need to have a real skill
I bet the title of this has already put some people off! It’s important to realise that there are many different levels of web design/programming/marketing and while all require you to have that skill (to some extent) often the skill isn’t a difficult one to learn. Since many businesses are outsourcing these kinds of tasks freelancing sites like elance, freelancer and fiver (all jobs are $5 lol) have sprung up which allow employers to post projects which freelancers then bid on. Now the main issue is do you have a skill that you can sell, and if not what would it take to learn one? This is very difficult to say as I don’t know your circumstances but the best route would be to try out one of those “for dummies” books as I learnt php in around a week with one (the basics). Also remember the goal with this type of work is the same as the last example, you want to build up a reputation with clients so that eventually they can give you steady work and you don’t have to bid on the freelance sites (they can be a pain).
Niche affiliate marketing
Pros: Unlimited earnings, your own boss, work on projects your interested in, no technical knowledge required
Cons: Some investment of time and money
I’ve saved the best until last (in my opinion) and it’s the one I’ve talked most about on this blog. In short affiliate marketing is the process of building small niche websites which are used to attract traffic (website visitors). Because the website is geared around a specific subject the traffic is valuable to advertisers who will pay commission on the sales we generate for them. Ok so the above statement may be simplifying things a little as the main job is getting people to the site, but the unique aspect of this system is that a successful website can be making you money even when you sleep. Ok so that’s 4 great ways anyone can make money from the internet in 2012, there’s something here for people of all skill levels, time and financial constraints. As with everything your results will depend on how much you’re prepared to put into any system, there’s a reason people filling out surveys are only getting 50p a time, anyone can do it. Making money in 2011 – freelancing for beginners
So I’m feeling at little bored and I suppose that’s never a perfect way to start a post though I have to admit some of my best ideas have come from just messing around on the internet and see what works, and more often than not what doesn’t. Anyway it’s the New Year in a day or so and I got me thinking how people (and me) are planning to make money in 2011. What new ideas are you going to have? What old ideas are you going to finally act on or do even better?
The biggest problem with making money on the internet is the number of options (and scams) there are. How do you pick something stick with it and make it work? So for this post I wanted to focus on ways you can actually work for a living online as opposed to a passive income from websites etc which I have been talking about recently. Now I know creating a passive income does sound very appealing but the thing is its usually only passive once you’ve done a huge amount of work that you get to a point where the revenue looks after itself. What if you just need to make some fast (ish) cash straight away?
So obviously the first thing you need to establish is what skill you have to offer the marketplace. There are a number of skills that are highly sought after on the net if you really can deliver (this is quite important). A few but not all are:
- Writing content
- Graphic design (photoshop etc)
- Programming (php,asp,coldfusion)
- SEO services (link building, on site optimisation)
Ok so you might have noticed all these services are quite “nerdy” and 100% IT related. Well the thing is if you want to work from home and get well paid for it IT really is the only game in town. Also the great thing about IT companies is they are much more open than traditional businesses to working with people overseas. If you can do the job well and on time they don’t really care.
So how to you land these big clients that will want to pay you millions for access to your brain? It’s a big question and it would probably be easier to tell you how NOT to do it but I don’t want to be negative. The key point is you want potential clients coming to you instead of you sending out 100s of unread email requests. Believe me when a client emails you out of the blue asking about your services it’s always a much easier sell. So for clients to notice you and your work you have to stand out above the crowd online (there can be quite a crowd). For example are you selling SEO services? Then rank a site for a popular term, within week’s you’ll be getting other SEO companies emailing about advertising etc, when they do – mention that you know SEO too. If you’re a designer then enter the best online design competitions or even design and amazing site for a charity to get noticed.
The biggest point I have to make about making money by offering services is that repeat business is essential, both for your income and stress levels. You see getting new clients is expensive and time consuming on its own but there’s also the time required just to work out what this person really wants. However if you are lucky enough to find someone who needs repeat work IE on a monthly basis then you can devote all of your time to building the relationship with them and delivering the perfect job.

There’s actually a lot more than that but there’s no point in going out posting on them all, concentrate on a few and build up a reputation.
I know some of you may be a bit fed up at this point if you don’t actually have any of these skills to offer. The only thing I can say is that webmaster/web-site related activities make up a huge amount of the online working world that you really have to acquire the skills if you want to earn any kind of real money with freelancing. You also have to bear in mind the many advantages you get with working online/freelancing like choosing your own working hours and working from anywhere in the world (this is especially true if you want to move somewhere with low living costs). It might not be as hard as you think though, I remember when I got my first PHP/MYsql book it was like a whole new world had opened up. I couldn’t believe the amount of things you could so with just a few hours reading.
So this post isn’t as “magical” as some you’ll find in the create money on the net world but then again isn’t it better to be realistic than just selling you some get rich quick scheme for 100 easy payments? The point I’m actually making is that with some work is it possible to create a real income from the net even if it’s only a supplementary thing to your main “job”. I know myself how much difference an extra £500 a month would make to most people, it could literally be life changing.
So what am I going to be doing in 2011? Well I really hope to grow all of my internet sites to their full potential which I know is going to take a good bit more work and probably a bit more understanding on my part about how this Internet marketing thing works (I don’t have all the pieces of the puzzle yet). Anyway I also hope to bring you more interesting and hopefully entertaining posts in the New Year too. Here’s to an exciting new year!
Eternal question: How to make money fast
Ok so I was thinking about this today. If I was starting from no-where and I had to learn how to make money fast with the internet what would I do? It’s one of those weird hypothetical questions because what exactly are the rules of the game? If you’re saying that I have none of the knowledge or resources that I have now to help me then it changes the situation quite a lot. But anyway technicalities aside I wanted to look into the question as I think it’s one every new person to the internet business world is asking. One thing I do want to clarify is how much money we are talking about and what kind of timeframes are involved. There’s so many get rich quick scams on the net these days that promise millions overnight with no work that I want to be realistic with people over what can be achieved. So what I’m going to look at is how easy would it be for a completely new person to the industry to make £500 extra a month part-time (I’m going to assume most of you still have day jobs).
- Writing content. I have actually talked about this one on the blog before and I really do see it as a legit source of income that you can just get started straight away with. The thing about writing content though is that you don’t really get paid all that much in the beginning. This is because there’s a big price range when it comes to quality of content as people are using content for all types of purposes. Most of the prices are in US cents and I’ve seen quotes from 1c per word all the way up to 3c. There was a post by a guy over at smartpassiveincome.com where he talks about how he started his online business just by writing guest posts for other bloggers. Seems like he was actually getting quite good money but I think the key to his success was getting developing a regular deal direct with bloggers who were looking for quality content. So there were no middle men and he was writing quality content for around 3c a word. He says he was only doing about 2-3 hours a day yet was making over £600 a month which is very impressive. So it does seem worth looking into but you’re going to have to wait for a while till the bigger pay cheques start to come in.
- Building websites. So as you can all guess this is my favourite method for making money because it’s the one I’ve spent most of my internet career on. It’s a method with solid foundations because as long as there’s an internet there are going to be people surfing around trying to buy things and if you can attract those people (even if it’s a small number) there is money to be made. There’s no doubt that this technique is much more technical than the last of just writing content for money however the great thing is that a website can be making you money while you sleep were a labour intensive things like content creation can feel more like a 9-5 job. One major problem with the website thing though is the time it can take to get results. Since Google and other search engines will be one of your main sources of customers you need to realise it can take a few months before you get any traction there. Still the webmasters who have mastered the overall skill are often able to generate money quickly.
- So this method is very unusual and it’s something I only recently learned about myself. The good thing though is it seems like a very fast way to make some extra cash, indeed some of the figures I’ve seen says it’s possible to make around £500 in a week or two with it. I first read about the idea at theregister which is an IT news site. They don’t usually have stories about making money through the internet but this “gambling for free” idea caught my eye. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not advocating gambling as a way to earn money as I hardly ever do it myself. I don’t even play the lottery because I think it’s a system to keep people lazy and stupid. Anyway you may or may not know that many of the online betting sites give away cash bonuses for new players or so called “free bets”. They can do this because of the huge potential value of a new customer on these betting sites. The “free bet” can be anywhere from £10 to £100 and it’s added to your account as soon as you sign up. However the thing is you usually can’t use it until you deposit and equal amount of your own money via credit card and then you have to bet the whole amount (and hopefully win) in order to claim it. Ok so no secrets so far however there are also lots of sites that let you bet on a team to lose like Betfair etc and this means you could bet against yourself ie the free bet on the other site. So normally when you bet against yourself both bets cancel themselves out however when some of the money is free (ie 50% of one bet) then you are guaranteed a return. Now the return probably isn’t going to be huge as you can expect anywhere between 60% and 70% profit. So on a £200 bet 50% of which is free you could maybe make between £10 and £30 profit depending on fees and other conditions. That amount of profit may not seem like a lot however when you consider the sheer number of betting sites that are doing introductory offers its clear you can make some good money very quickly. The original article here probably explains this better than I have done but hopefully I’ve got across the basics.
I actually have a few more ideas for making some quick cash but I don’t want to confuse people with more ideas than they need as the internet is often confusing enough. It’s also worth noting that if something’s too good to be true it probably so all the methods detailed above require a reasonable amount of work in order to earn a return. Even with the last “gambling” idea you have to keep detailed track of what you’re doing and spend time signing up to all these sites and adding your details, nothings easy lol. Still hopefully it will give you guys some inspiration on how to make money fast with the internet.
